A WAVE of emotions filled the city’s Olympic Hall on Sunday, October 11, as Italians, Greeks and history enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the ship Regina d’Italia’s (Queen of Italy) arrival in Adelaide.

As part of the Odyssey Festival, the audience was treated to rare footage of the ship’s 1924 journey from Italy to Australia.

The premier of Dall’Italia All’Australia documented Italian film producer Stefano Pittaluga’s first-person account of rough seas, stunning sunsets, diverse coastlines and loneliness during the three-month voyage.

Even though most of the audience did not know passengers on the ship, many shared in the hardship of leaving their home countries to arrive in a foreign land.

The silent film was discovered by Melbourne author Tony De Bolfo and was accompanied by folk group I Viaggiatori, whose traditional Italian and Greek tunes transported all comers back in time.

It was a wonderful cultural event for young people to see the challenges of migration, and a chance for those who made similar journeys to connect with their roots.
